Exclusive runs always win the hype game. The availability of brands like Vans and Converse makes the kicks lose value on the resale market. So naturally, they make really fantastic beaters. However, companies like Nike and Adidas capitalize on exclusivity as well as general releases. An excellent example of that would be Yeezys during their prime. Getting your hands on a pair was a big deal, and the kicks were worth a lot in resale. However, the exclusivity card isn’t a long-term strategy. Sadly, the partnership ended in 2022 and didn’t survive long enough for us to see how things will turn out.

Collaboration is Key to Hyped Sneakers

We’ll repeat, not all collabs are worth the flip, but collabs are usually worth the money you’ll invest in them. When a popular brand collaborates with an equally cool brand, the results are very hyped sneakers! And that’s how an otherwise available brand can give us a hot pair of kicks. Obvious examples of this are Fear of God x Vans Era 95 DX Marshmallow. It retailed for $90 and currently resells for $1,200 on average! Another one is Off-White x Chuck 70 Hi “The Ten” which retailed for $130 and resells for around $1,800. Of course, this was due to the relationship between exclusivity and value. The kicks we mentioned were pretty rare!

On another note, Adidas failed miserably to create hype with their IVY PARK and Pharrell partnerships. Yeezy, as we already mentioned, lost some of its appeal but was still worth copping. However, sneaker collabs like Travis Scott with Jordan and Nike are literally what’s keeping the hype world together. So, again, there’s more at play here than what meets the eye.

A Good Endorsement Does Wonders!

Choosing the right athlete is crucial to the marketing game. The Jordan endorsement is living proof of that. Remember the time when Michael Jordan didn’t want to sign with Nike? Converse, as the best basketball shoe company back then, didn’t see much in a rookie. MJ wanted to sign with Adidas but they couldn’t make basketball shoes so they passed up on the offer. Customizable Halloween Shoes Are Elite

First off, we just gotta say that Nike always outdoes everyone when it comes to holiday-themed sneakers. This year we’re gonna have two Halloween Dunks that will make you miss trick or treating. But if you’re a sneaker collector, then you’re gonna have a field day when you get these babies! And, here’s an idea: if you’re not there yet, maybe it’s time to start collecting kicks. Not a terrible idea right?

So first off, we have the Nike SB Dunk Low “Mummy”. Not only are they mummified, but the upper is tear away with another layer underneath! Moreover, the tongue features the Eye of Horus, the ancient Egyptian god. Along with the glow-in-the-dark soles, the kicks are an awesome tribute to ancient Egypt.

The second pair looks basic at first glance. But ho ho no! The kicks feature glow-in-the-dark details on the black leather upper. The scary eyes will star back at ya when the lighting is right, and so will the soles. Now, as far as we know, both Halloween shoes will drop in October 2021. Adidas Is Hopping Back on Track!

Apparently, Adidas finally realized that dropping sneakers on holidays is a great idea. And because it’s Go Big or Go Home, the three stripes are going biiiig! However, they’ll still look okay to wear on any other day. So these are for both Halloween fans and lifestyle peeps. Firstly, we have the awesome “Monster Pack” that includes the Superstars and the Forums. Both silhouettes rock a mix of black leather, suede, and faux fur uppers. The outsoles have a green goo print on them, and the look is complete with vampire teeth dubraes!

Another pair of Halloween shoes will come in the shape of the classic Superstar. This time, the kicks come in corduroy uppers with plaid overlays. The most interesting bits about these babies are the jack-o-lantern dubrae and green fuzzy sock liners. And if you’re looking for something even more toned down, the “How to Kill a Werewolf” Campus 80s is it. This one will come in a grey werewolf faux fur upper, with 3 stripe claw marks on the tongue. What Is the Nike Toasty Collection?

The new Nike Toasty pack is a very interesting take on the Move to Zero project. I mean, it’s not a project as much as a whole movement. With “Move to Zero”, Nike aims to have zero carbon emissions and waste. From Space Hippies to the Craters in 2020, we absolutely dig the efforts. But now, the sneaker giant will take sustainability in a pretty… toasty path! Nike Toasty includes a pretty wide range of silhouettes and colorways. That’s an additional point for the collection over the older attempts.

Nike Toasty Dunks: The High ‘N’ Lows

So, the star silhouette of this collection is definitely the Nike Dunk. From the highs to the lows, we totally love all the looks we’re gonna get. First off, we got three new colorways of the Nike Dunk High! One is an all-pink Nike Dunk LX, the second is a pretty nice creamy pair of Highs. And finally, we have a really nice mish-mash of fall colors with the oil green, beige, white, and black Nike Dunk High LX. The three pairs feature fleece sock liners, with the Move to Zero logo on the tongues.

Now we move on to the low version of Dunks. These babies will come in two different colorways. The first is a pretty nice pair that features two different shades of blue. However, the second pair is killing it with a pretty awesome olive colorway. It would be pretty monochromatic if it wasn’t for the orange swoosh on the sides!

Nothing Like a Pair of Classic Air Force 1s!

We love it when Nike takes classic sneakers and pulls off crazy awesome new looks. But then again, is the Nike Toasty collection complete without one or two Air Forces, or more? Well, this collection is giving us three different colorways. The first comes in a mix of beige and brown while the second rocks different shades of olive. They both give an awesome quilt vibe, so no regrets there.

The last colorway though is an absolute fav. We love an all-black colorway and the fleece on the inside actually gives a winter sneaker aura to it. The white midsole sits on a grey speckled outsole that kinda reminds us of the awesome Space Hippies. So if we personally had to choose between these three, this would be on top!

How Did Sneaker Collaborations Start?

Before we get to the actual music introduction to the industry, we gotta pay a tribute to the OG collaborator: Chuck Taylor. I mean, Converse named the whole silhouette after him, so he must have done something right! Chuck Taylor was a basketball player who turned into a pretty successful salesman later on. In fact, he joined Converse in 1921 as a salesman and helped develop sneakers a lot. His success got his name on the Converse All-Star tag, and we got the first celebrity sneaker endorsement ever!

When Did Music and Sneakers Cross Paths?

Chuck Taylor and Converse were definitely ahead of their time. That’s probably why it took the sneaker industry years and years to catch up! The 70s were good years for athletic sneaker endorsements. And then came Michael Jordan in 1984 and introduced the concept of hype and exclusive collabs, in a way. Air Jordans almost became a status symbol on the streets, with movies referencing them and so on. Today, Jordan Brand is almost a standalone brand that needs no introduction anymore. All that talk though is still about athletic endorsements. However, 1986 came, and with it came Run DMC with their song “My Adidas”. This song led to the first music x sneaker collaboration ever. And dare we say it? Well, we will anyway, this step paved the way for every music and sneakers collab that followed. I mean, it definitely did something right if we still discuss that event today!

So, the upcoming Social Status Nike Dunk Mid colorways are pretty awesome and straightforward. The first colorway is called Chocolate Milk, and it features a brown and sail upper. With a jewel-like pink swoosh and popping blue outsoles! The second comes in a Strawberry Milk flavor, which features, you guessed it, a pink and sail upper.

Moreover, both kicks will feature cool details like the tongue tags and writings on the sides. The tongue tags are inspired by ‘free lunch’ tickets for underprivileged communities. Social Status Nike Dunk Mid Release Deets

The upcoming Nike Dunk Mid colorways will drop on two different dates! The Chocolate Milk colorway will come on September 4, 2021. If you’re not familiar with the history of the brands, let’s check it out really fast now. So first up, we got Nike. Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight started the Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964. That was before they opted for Nike, after the Greek goddess of victory. And it was uphill from there peeps! If you wanna check out the history of the Nike logo and more, check this out.

On the other hand, Adidas’ story is a bit more interesting because it was born out of a nasty family feud. The German Adolf and Rudolf Dassler initially started the “Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory” in 1924. However, as we said, a family feud ensued and the brothers split. Adolf “Adi” Dassler went on and started Adidas while Rudolf started Ruda, or Puma as we know it today. That was back in 1949, and still going strong.

Nike vs Adidas Market Shares

It’s common knowledge that both companies made a huge impact on sportswear. After all, they introduced some crazy classics that we all own or owned at some point. However, it’s pretty interesting how their areas of influence are distributed! For example, Nike’s main revenue comes from North America, which kinda makes sense. However, Adidas’ main revenue comes from the Asia-Pacific region. This region includes the southeast and east of Asia and Oceania. Interestingly enough, Europe comes second in revenues for both companies.

But how much are Nike and Adidas worth? Well, it’s worth noting that both brands’ values dropped in 2021. Nike is currently worth around $30.44B, which is $4B less than 2020. Meanwhile, Adidas is worth $14.3B, $2B less than 2020. So in this round of the Nike vs Adidas rivalry, Nike clearly wins.

Collabs Are As Important as Ever!

How do brands grow and stay relevant? Besides the development of technologies and awesome marketing, we got collabs. And both brands are pretty generous on that front! But I think you already know what the best sneaker collabs are. And if you don’t, then carry on with your reading!

First off, we got Nike. You know, the Swoosh seriously hit a mega jackpot with Michael Jordan’s endorsement. Both companies went above and beyond on their technology development. However, we’ll just settle for our top four by each brand. Let’s start with Adidas and its best cushioning technologies! First off we got the very interesting 4D cushioning, Bounce, and Cloudfoam. However, the actual technology that gave Adidas a headstart is the mighty Boost! You can read all about it here.

Now off to Nike who doesn’t take the Nike vs Adidas competition lightly. But we kinda appreciate how Nike sticks to the classics that work just fine to this day. I mean, why fix what isn’t broken? Maybe upgrade it sometimes, which they did with the Air and Air Zoom cushioning! We also have ZoomX cushioning which was pretty controversial, and almost got banned from the 2020 Olympics! So, all in all, we’ll call it a draw here! The Nike vs Adidas battle evens out when we talk about cushioning. You know, both brands gave a lot to the sneaker industry, and we can’t choose one over the other.

So, Who Wins?

You didn’t honestly think that we’d have an answer to that, did you? We’re talking about the biggest 2 brands in the sneaker/ sportswear industry. And we definitely don’t see either of them going anywhere anytime soon, and we hope we don’t. It’s the competition that keeps the game going, especially in the case of Nike vs Adidas.

Moreover, when things get bad, everyone apparently puts their differences aside. When the pandemic and the US riots against racism were pretty intense, something pretty interesting happened. Adidas actually retweeted Nike and supported the cause, which sent everyone off the wall! But well, we back to the competition now fam, and that’s the fun of it all.

Nike Cortez – Sneakers in Movies Sometimes Steal the Lead

Run Forrest! Run!

The movie that earned Tom Hanks his second Oscar, and everyone knows, has a humongous sneaker moment! It’s when Jenny gifts Forrest the Nike Cortez for him to go on a little run. The run that inspired many across the country, unintentionally. The kicks became a pop culture icon, along with Bubba’s shrimps.

Another time the Nike Cortez made an appearance is years later, in The Wolf of Wall Street. When Jordan Belfort (Leo DiCaprio) drugs himself to the ground and wrestles with his Lambo, we get a clear view of the kicks! A white Nike Cortez with a black swoosh kinda steals the show.

Back to the Future II – Nike Air Mags

Do we really need to explain this fam? Back to the Future isn’t just an iconic movie, it’s like a cultural shift for sneakers! The Nike Air Mag kinda set the foundation for futuristic sneakers. I mean: ‘Where we’re going, we don’t need laces!’ And sneaker designer Tinker Hatfield definitely introduced a crazy concept. However, it’s not crazy anymore, and self-lacing kicks are as real as they come!

Sneaker in Movies Like Space Jam Still Count!

Yes, yes, we mean Space Jam. Not the 2021 Space Jam, although it was a sight to see. However, the 1996 Space Jam will always be the favorite in OG sneakerheads’ hearts. Not because of Jordan, Bugs Bunny, or even Bill Murray! It’s because the movie gave us the legendary Air Jordan 11 ‘Space Jam’. The silhouette is amazing, the colorway is simple and totally flex-worthy to this day!

Do the Right Thing – Air Jordan 4 Cement

Okay so, we all know how Spike Lee is big on his sneakers. The man practically included crazy kicks in every one of his movies! But Do the Right Thing is the best because, well, it’s the AJ4 Cement! We all remember the line: ‘He stepped on my brand-new white Jordans!’ And honestly? We can still feel the pain. The movie was such a cultural shift that Jordan Brand dropped a ‘Do the Right Thing’ pack in 2017!

Aliens – Reebok Alien Stomper

Okay so enough with Nikes. We could go on forever about how Nike sneakers in movies killed it, but we gotta draw the line somewhere. So in 1986, Reebok designed a custom sneaker for the movie. However, it became a real shoe later, because it’s pretty lit. And in my opinion, it’s a pretty underrated silhouette, but to each their own I guess. Onitsuka Tiger – When Sneakers in Movies Are as Big as the Franchise!

Last but not least, it’s a shame if we gotta talk about sneakers in movies and no one mentions this. The Onitsuka Tiger single-handedly spread its authority over two different movies! Bruce Lee’s 1978 Game of Death is memorable for many reasons. One of these reasons is Lee’s all-yellow outfit, including the Onitsuka Tiger. Although the brand later became Asics, the kicks kept their name. And that was well-deserved if you ask me.

Fast forward to 2003, and Quentin Tarantino made a masterpiece in the name of Kill Bill. But what made that movie extra special for sneakerheads is Uma Thurman’s outfit! Inspired by Bruce Lee, Thurman killed it (literally) with the yellow tracksuit and the undying Onitsuka Tiger Mexico 66.
