Sadly, the partnership ended in 2022 and didn’t survive long enough for us to see how things will turn out.

We’ll repeat, not all collabs are worth the flip, but collabs are usually worth the money you’ll invest in them. When a popular brand collaborates with an equally cool brand, the results are very hyped sneakers! And that’s how an otherwise available brand can give us a hot pair of kicks. Obvious examples of this are Fear of God x Vans Era 95 DX Marshmallow. It retailed for $90 and currently resells for $1,200 on average! Another one is Off-White x Chuck 70 Hi “The Ten” which retailed for $130 and resells for around $1,800. Of course, this was due to the relationship between exclusivity and value. The kicks we mentioned were pretty rare!

On another note, Adidas failed miserably to create hype with their IVY PARK and Pharrell partnerships. Yeezy, as we already mentioned, lost some of its appeal but was still worth copping. However, sneaker collabs like Travis Scott with Jordan and Nike are literally what’s keeping the hype world together. So, again, there’s more at play here than what meets the eye.

Yeezy Foam Runner and The Identity Crisis

Don’t come at us because we love the foamies too, but let’s be real here. The kicks look like they’re having an identity crisis! They kinda look like a futuristic take on your average pair of Crocs, which are currently in vogue it seems. And if you look hard enough, you can see traces of the Yeezy 700s in there. We’re not saying we hate it (we clearly don’t), we’re just saying that they’re not your average silhouette! Of course, something this weird split the crowds in two. The first half wouldn’t wear them even for money, while the second half can’t wear anything else anymore.

Now, when it comes to comfort, these babies are serving! They’re no Boosts, but they certainly outdid Yeezy Slides and then some. Naturally, it made its way to pop culture like no other, from memes to quotes, The Simpsons has it all. And now, Adidas is throwing a tribute to the world’s favorite left-hander: Ned Flanders! And honestly, the shoes kinda look like Ned… in a good way?

Customizable Halloween Shoes Are Elite

First off, we just gotta say that Nike always outdoes everyone when it comes to holiday-themed sneakers. This year we’re gonna have two Halloween Dunks that will make you miss trick or treating. But if you’re a sneaker collector, then you’re gonna have a field day when you get these babies! And, here’s an idea: if you’re not there yet, maybe it’s time to start collecting kicks. Not a terrible idea right?

So first off, we have the Nike SB Dunk Low “Mummy”. Not only are they mummified, but the upper is tear away with another layer underneath! Moreover, the tongue features the Eye of Horus, the ancient Egyptian god. Along with the glow-in-the-dark soles, the kicks are an awesome tribute to ancient Egypt.

The second pair looks basic at first glance. But ho ho no! The kicks feature glow-in-the-dark details on the black leather upper. The scary eyes will star back at ya when the lighting is right, and so will the soles. Now, as far as we know, both Halloween shoes will drop in October 2021. Adidas Is Hopping Back on Track!

Apparently, Adidas finally realized that dropping sneakers on holidays is a great idea. And because it’s Go Big or Go Home, the three stripes are going biiiig! However, they’ll still look okay to wear on any other day. So these are for both Halloween fans and lifestyle peeps. Firstly, we have the awesome “Monster Pack” that includes the Superstars and the Forums. Both silhouettes rock a mix of black leather, suede, and faux fur uppers. The outsoles have a green goo print on them, and the look is complete with vampire teeth dubraes!

Another pair of Halloween shoes will come in the shape of the classic Superstar. This time, the kicks come in corduroy uppers with plaid overlays. The most interesting bits about these babies are the jack-o-lantern dubrae and green fuzzy sock liners. How Did Sneaker Collaborations Start?

Before we get to the actual music introduction to the industry, we gotta pay a tribute to the OG collaborator: Chuck Taylor. I mean, Converse named the whole silhouette after him, so he must have done something right! Chuck Taylor was a basketball player who turned into a pretty successful salesman later on. In fact, he joined Converse in 1921 as a salesman and helped develop sneakers a lot. His success got his name on the Converse All-Star tag, and we got the first celebrity sneaker endorsement ever!

When Did Music and Sneakers Cross Paths?

Chuck Taylor and Converse were definitely ahead of their time. That’s probably why it took the sneaker industry years and years to catch up! The 70s were good years for athletic sneaker endorsements. And then came Michael Jordan in 1984 and introduced the concept of hype and exclusive collabs, in a way. Air Jordans almost became a status symbol on the streets, with movies referencing them and so on. Today, Jordan Brand is almost a standalone brand that needs no introduction anymore. All that talk though is still about athletic endorsements. However, 1986 came, and with it came Run DMC with their song “My Adidas”. This song led to the first music x sneaker collaboration ever. If you’re not familiar with the history of the brands, let’s check it out really fast now. So first up, we got Nike. Bill Bowerman and Phil Knight started the Blue Ribbon Sports in 1964. On the other hand, Adidas’ story is a bit more interesting because it was born out of a nasty family feud. The German Adolf and Rudolf Dassler initially started the “Dassler Brothers Shoe Factory” in 1924. However, as we said, a family feud ensued and the brothers split. Adolf “Adi” Dassler went on and started Adidas while Rudolf started Ruda, or Puma as we know it today. That was back in 1949, and still going strong.

It’s common knowledge that both companies made a huge impact on sportswear. After all, they introduced some crazy classics that we all own or owned at some point. However, it’s pretty interesting how their areas of influence are distributed! For example, Nike’s main revenue comes from North America, which kinda makes sense. However, Adidas’ main revenue comes from the Asia-Pacific region. This region includes the southeast and east of Asia and Oceania. So, all in all, we’ll call it a draw here! The Nike vs Adidas battle evens out when we talk about cushioning. You know, both brands gave a lot to the sneaker industry, and we can’t choose one over the other.

So, Who Wins?

You didn’t honestly think that we’d have an answer to that, did you? We’re talking about the biggest 2 brands in the sneaker/ sportswear industry. And we definitely don’t see either of them going anywhere anytime soon, and we hope we don’t. It’s the competition that keeps the game going, especially in the case of Nike vs Adidas.

Moreover, when things get bad, everyone apparently puts their differences aside. When the pandemic and the US riots against racism were pretty intense, something pretty interesting happened. Adidas actually retweeted Nike and supported the cause, which sent everyone off the wall! But well, we back to the competition now fam, and that’s the fun of it all.

Whether you’re a rookie or veteran sneakerhead, you have to know how important Travis’ kicks are. Apparently, he’s not just the highest in the room, he’s also the highest on the aftermarket! The 50 shades of hype introduced Nike’s ‘exclusive access’. We personally think that’s another level of sneaker dictatorship and disappointments. But whatever man, to each their own, right? So anyway, if you were lucky enough to gain exclusive access, then you’re sitting on a fortune! The luckiest would be Lot 1 & 50 winners because they can flip them for $1,150 and $1,253 respectively. Sneaker Logos Hit Differently When You Know!

Nike’s Swoosh

You would think that a logo for a huge sneaker giant like Nike would cost a lot, right? Wrong! The OG Nike Swoosh actually cost the company $35 only back in 1971. The designer, Carolyn Davidson aimed to make the logo look like Nike the goddess of victory’s wing. One of the goddess’ powers is speed, and the swoosh is the “sound” of speed. Don’t feel bad for the designer though, she owns shares in the company now, and a diamond swoosh ring!

Although we’re discussing sneaker logos, we can’t pass by Nike and not discuss its slogan. “Just Do It”… I mean, it was a fantastic phrase until we discovered where it came from. According to Nike’s advertising company, the inspiration behind the phrase is actually a criminal. Gary Gilmore’s last words “Let’s do it” before his execution. Pretty grim, amirite?

Adidas – Sneaker Logos Get… Confusing?

Next up, we have the three stripes! Or the trefoil? Who knows? Well, we do, but we wanted to be a bit dramatic. First of all, Adidas has multiple logos that are all pretty much active to this day. The first logo is the classic trefoil that represents the three landmasses America, Europe/Africa, and Asia. In other words, it shows the diversity and that Adidas is for everyone.

But you can’t have a 3-stripes company without actual three stripes, right? That’s why the next logo is as iconic as the first. The mountain-like inclined 3-stripes represent the obstacles that athletes face and overcome. Who knew simple sneaker logos could hit so deep… Anyway, the latest addition to Adidas logos is a simple wordmark with 3 horizontal stripes. This one is obviously meant to be timeless and stay for a long time.

PS: If you didn’t know it, Adidas is simply a mashup of the founder’s name: Adolf “Adi” Dassler.

Puma

We had to put Puma up next because we can’t discuss one Dassler brother without the other, can we? Ironically, the company was gonna be called Ruda (Rudolf Dassler, duh) but then Rudolf went for Puma. His inspiration was the Puma cat, and he wanted his products to reflect the same qualities: speed, strength, agility, and more. The logo began as a puma cat leaping through a capital D, for Dassler. The design then evolved to become today’s text that we know, with the leaping cat.

Fun fact: The designer of the logo, cartoonist Lutz Backes, was offered a commission for every item sold with his logo design. Instead, he chose to receive a one-time payment, sneakers, and a sports bag.

Air Jordan – The Best Sneaker Logos Are the Simplest!

We know you don’t need an introduction to this specific logo, but we might as well! You know you’re a successful athlete and human when your name becomes a brand. And that’s exactly what happened with Michael Jordan. The first logo that we know and love on the first two Air Jordan silhouettes is a basketball with wings. Straight to the point and efficient.

However, it’s not nearly as iconic as the mighty Jumpman. The logo first appeared on the AJ3, and is still here today on every apparel item and pair of kicks! Moreover, the origin of the logo is pretty interesting, despite the fact that Tinker Hatfield designed it in 1988. He designed it based on a photograph though. And that picture is the source of all the debate!

So the initial picture was by Life magazine, of Jordan soaring through the air. When Peter Moore and the team saw the picture, they wanted to use it, but you know… copyrights. So they went on and recreated the pics, and the Jumpman was born.

Reebok

So you probably already heard, but Adidas sold Reebok for $2.5 Billion! Anyway, the UK-original US-based brand Reebok has a pretty simple logo history. It all started with a Union Jack flag logo, and it evolved from there! The logo went through several redesigns, but our favorite so far is the current two stripes with the third across. The red delta logo also represents the physical, mental, and social transformations equally.

Asics

No, as opposed to what teenage me thought, the designers didn’t put a reversed “B” on the logo. It’s actually an A for Asics, naturally. Interestingly enough, Asics is an acronym for the Latin phrase: Anima Sana In Corpore Sano. The phrase means “a sound mind in a sound body”. And honestly, this is the deepest story among all the sneaker logos and names so far.

Ironically, before becoming Asics, the sneaker brand’s name was Onitsuka after the company’s founder. However, the Latin phrase made such an impression on him that he changed the whole brand! And if you’re wondering what the side stripes mean, we gotchu. It was a simple in-house design competition where the Mexico stripes won!

Vans – Why Fix Sneaker Logos That Ain’t Broken?

One of the most consistent sneaker logos so far on our list. Why? Because it barely changed since 1966! When they see the extended “V”, everybody just knows that we’re about to see some kicks. However, one variation became almost as iconic as the original design. The skateboard with Vans “off the wall” inside is a direct nod to the brand’s skateboarding origins.

Converse

This one is pretty interesting. So, Converse is one of the brands that didn’t really have a constant logo until they dropped the All-Star silhouette. The kicks were so popular that the brand adopted the star and included it in all of their logos since 1962. I mean, we all know that beauty is in simplicity, and Converse definitely went for that!

New Balance

Last but not least, another consistent design by New Balance. We wouldn’t miss the brand after all the crazy collabs they’re throwing our way! The N and B merge beautifully with stripes on the N to represent speed. And since 1972, the brand kept the same logo with minor iterations.

Honorary Mention: Supreme

Not a sneaker brand, but we can’t talk logos and not discuss a controversial yet iconic logo like this. And Supreme is famous for some of the best sneaker collabs around! So the story behind this logo is pretty cool, especially that it involves a rip-off. The bold Futura Oblique font and red box are actually the trademark style of the artist Barbara Kruger. Kruger is a rebellious artist and definitely supports anti-capitalism. This is kinda ironic considering what Supreme New York is, right? You can actually read more about this right here!

Yeezy Light – Not Your Average 350

So at first sight, you’d think that you’re dealing with another monochromatic Yeezy 350. God knows we got so many of these. However, this one is like an easter egg! The cream white Primeknit upper, along with the translucent stripe, are both UV sensitive. In other words, when you expose your kicks to sunlight, the Primeknit will turn into a soft pink shade. The stripe will go from translucent white to a very cool amber color.

Pretty exciting right? This is the first time we get this tech on a Yeezy. And that’s totally cool since Ye and Co. seem to be experimenting with materials and tech. The Monofilament pack is still pretty fresh in our minds yo! Anyway, a translucent white Boost midsole completes the look as usual with white rope laces.

Release Deets

In the wake of Yeezy Day and all the Ls so many of us took, we need Yeezy Light in our lives! The kicks will probably drop on August 28, 2021, for the usual $220. And whether you’re expanding your sneaker collection or wanna flip, retail is your friend. The kicks are worth $499 on average on the aftermarket!
