Nike Air Terra Forma – A Spicy Miami Launch!

Before we get to the actual pair, we gotta talk about the commemorative exhibit in Miami. Under the title of “The Codes c/o Architecture”, the exhibit is all about the Nike x Off-White partnership. In it, you could see sneakers and colorways that never got a public release. It also shows the creative process, or methodology, that Virgil used to do his designs. “Abloh’s Codes” are applicable across different mediums or products.

The exhibit took place in the Rubell Museum, Miami, from December 1 to 4, 2022. And one of the items on display was the Virgil-original Off-White Nike Air Terra Forma. This new silhouette kinda immortalizes the partnership between Nike and Virgil. The brands also confirmed that these babies are in fact gonna drop. So, what do we know about them so far?

The Looks of It

At first glance, the sneakers are a lot to take in. Since they’re winter-friendly, the kicks feature a high-top upper with a mix of materials like synthetics and suede. A translucent swoosh on the side panels is a must since it’s a Nike product at heart. But the stars of the show here are the tongues and the soles. The tongues are mismatched, and they feature the Off-White logo as well as the insoles.

Now, all the action goes on the sole level. The midsole features three different layers that include Air cushioning and Nike Air Inner Space tech. Virgil Abloh Pre-Fashion Career

Before we get into the fashion impact, we must know the backstory. Virgil Abloh was born in Illinois, US, to Ghanaian immigrant parents. So naturally, the African American heritage there is strong. He got a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering and followed it up with a Master’s in Architecture! And that’s when his fashion career started by designing tees and writing on The Brilliance blog.

Fashion Career Kicks Off with Kanye

In 2009, Kanye West and Virgil Abloh met at a Fendi workshop and started their relationship from there. He became the creative director at Kanye’s creative agency, Donda. That’s not all, though, because Virgil likes to experiment with art. His artistic experiment came in the form of 2012’s Pyrex Vision. The company closed its doors a year later because experiments ended!

Then Came Off-White, and the Rest Was a Bright Future

After Pyrex Vision, the only way was up. Virgil founded the Italy-based brand Off-White in 2013, and it became a significant connector of streetwear and high-end fashion. His products became super famous for their signature quotation marks, zip ties, capital letters, and more. Off-White even made it to Paris Fashion Week, which says a lot about the brand!

Fast forward to 2017, and Virgil landed his first gig with Nike that ended up putting him on the sneaker map. It was never the same afterward because Virgil Abloh and hype became synonyms! After all, “The Ten” collection remains one of the most epic collabs. But that wasn’t the only highlight of the year because Abloh partnered with IKEA that same year. It wasn’t the last partnership with both brands, though, because he came back on board later again.

Next up, a stop in 2018, where the fashion industry buzzed with the great news. Virgil Abloh became the first Artistic Director of LV’s menswear of African heritage! He also became one of the few black designers on the head of a big fashion house. So it’s safe to say that Virgil paved the way for inclusivity in the fashion industry.

The guy was a multi-talented human, and you can’t convince us otherwise. His frequent collabs with the Japanese artist Takashi Murakami are proof enough. However, the most famous exhibition was the Figures of Speech at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago. He also merged music and art by designing renowned cover arts like Jay-Z and Kanye’s “Watch the Throne.”

A Little Air Jordan 2 Recap

Okay so, the Air Jordan line spans for over 36 silhouettes if you wanna include hybrids and such. However, the silhouettes don’t get the same amount of love at all. The second silhouette is among the less-loved Jordan silhouettes. You might call it an underdog if you want. Why? Well, to put it simply, the AJ2 didn’t get the hype and kinda lived in the shadow of the OG silhouette.

Moreover, Jordan 2 was made in Italy and not in Asia like other Jordan & Nike shoes. It featured faux-lizard leather and generally premium material. And that meant that the kicks came with a higher price tag. The Twos were actually the first Jordans to cross the $100 threshold, and in the 80s, that was a lot. Lastly, the molds of the AJ2 were “lost” between 1994 and 2001. We doubt the loss part, but whatever makes them sleep better at night. But then, miraculously, JB managed to recover the original molds, and queue the retros!

So after reading about these babies, we understand the appeal that Virgil found in them. We know the sneaker designer doesn’t take the mainstream approach to things. So choosing the Air Jordan 2 for this collab isn’t really surprising. Now, let’s get to the actual business. The new Off White Jordan 2 will come in two colorways: white/red, and black/blue. There apparently is no change of materials since it’s all leather. However, on the upper, we’re gonna get none other than MJ’s own signature!

Twists Always Add a Little Flavor…

The full action though is going on in the midsole. Instead of the usual sleek new-looking midsole, we’re getting midsoles with cracks. You know when we see the videos with people showing us the crumbling midsoles? Yeah well, the new Off White Jordan 2 looks exactly like them. That kinda gives an interesting vintage-y feel to the kicks. So really, if you ain’t flexing them, starting a sneaker collection with them sounds like a good idea.

“Exclusive Access on SNKRS is an invitation to access coveted products, outside of regular launches. The goal is always to reward members with access to products they’ll love. Granted, there are bad actors out there who try to game the system, and Exclusive Access has been specifically designed to take that fact into consideration.”

In other words, Nike SNKRS wasn’t enough to stop sneaker bots from getting them kicks. So they got creative by controlling who gets which drops. But with every game-changer, there are downsides; this time, it was the lack of choice. Read on to discover what we mean by that.

What Do You Mean, I Can’t Choose?!

Surprise, surprise! Virgil Abloh and Nike are dropping the “Dear Summer” 50 collection, on their own terms though. If the app selects you for Exclusive Access, you don’t get to choose what pair you get! What you can actually do is just choose your shoe size, and that’s it. The colorway will be chosen randomly. And you shall be forever grateful for whatever Nike chooses for you. But to be fair, the kicks all feature amazing variations, so we don’t have anything to complain about.

The Exclusive Access invitations will start to roll out on August 9, 2021. If you’re one of the lucky peeps who receive the invite, you gotta be fast! The access will not mean they reserved a pair for you, but that you now can go and buy the kicks. But anyway, if you’re not gonna get them for the flex, get them for the flip! Although they didn’t officially drop yet, we already have an idea of how much the kicks will be worth.
