Reseller Tax, Third-Party Platforms, and Profit!

With all the latest talk about tariffs on imported goods and increased taxes, we can see how things can get confusing. So today, we’re gonna talk about the reseller tax and how you might be affected on platforms like StockX. 

First off, you gotta learn about Form 1099-K. If you made more than $5,000 in gross payments for a sale through a third-party platform in 2024, you should expect to receive a Form 1099-K. That threshold dropped to $2,500 in 2025 and will drop to a whopping $600 in 2026 onwards. Mind you, this whole thing is just for US sellers, and it depends on the state that you live in and its regulations.

You see, many states require that StockX report your sales if they exceed the total of $600. This threshold might vary by state. However, StockX is required to file a Form 1099-K report with the IRS in case the gross amount of your transactions is $5,000 or more in 2024. You see, people will have different opinions when it comes to how relevant Dunks are. But we gotta start at the beginning. The Nike Dunk was a basketball shoe that mashed up all our favorite sneakers in one. And the OG target audience was college athletes and their fans since Nike already had deals with multiple universities. Although they were popular for a while, their popularity slowly faded. Fast forward to the early 2000s, and the Dunks made a comeback under the Nike SB division! But sure enough, that peak in popularity also dimmed, with only the dedicated fan still buying Dunks. At some point, these babies sat at outlets when you could buy them for much less than their original price! And that happened a couple of times, until 2020 when the whole drift changed.

Nike Plays the Hype Game

If 2020 was anything for Dunks, it was a strategic year. Nike played their cards well and at the right time! Slowly, but surely, we saw A-listers with weight in the sneaker industry rocking Dunks. From Travis Scott, all the way to LeBron James’ tunnel fits, Nike Dunks were there. So, that lowkey started creating hype in the back of everyone’s heads.

Why was that move crucial? Because when the Swoosh hit us with the hot collabs, the public was ready to fight tooth and nail for them! Why Is Stadium Goods Shutting Down Its NYC Store?

Before we talk about the news, let’s back it up to the start of it all. In October 2015, Stadium Goods opened its retail store at 47 Howard Street in SoHo. Now, keep in mind that in 2018, Farfetch acquired Stadium Goods for $250 million! Now, the retail giant faced financial problems in the last few years and nearly announced its bankruptcy. However, the South Korean online retailer Coupang stepped up in December 2023 and acquired Farfetch.

After all was said and done, some drastic measures were taken to keep the work going. You see, in 2023, the consignment store did a round of layoffs and closed its Chicago store. And now, we get the news that the New York City store will close its doors after 10 years of operations. Apparently, this decision comes after feeling that they need to focus on their online presence. According to an email that Stadium Goods sent to its sellers, their business will not be affected by this closure.

In addition to the news of closing the 47 Howard St. store on January 19, 2025, it seems like the market center at 412 Broadway will become both a drop-off point and a retail place for buyers. And while Stadium Goods will focus on its digital presence, which generates most of its revenue, the retailer still believes in the value of physical stores.

What Does This Mean for the Industry?

Okay so, with online retailers taking the bulk of the shopping power, some would argue that physical stores are losing their touch.
