It’s very important to understand what sneaker samples are and how they’re different from other kicks. Basically, samples are prototype pairs that a brand produces for various reasons. For example:

• Test Pairs: These are the sneaker samples that are made to test how the material, colors, patterns will affect the general look and feel of the kicks. These are usually the first run before the general release. Sometimes designs get scrapped at this stage, and the “unreleased samples” are the only existing pairs in the world.

• Look-See Samples: These exist in the case of a collaboration or endorsement. The brand shows the collaborator (usually an athlete, celebrity, or another brand) what it’ll look like. Based on these samples, the collaborator either accepts or rejects it.

• Wear Test Samples: These samples are made to test new sneaker tech and how they perform. Based on the reviews, the designers tweak the kicks to get the optimal result.

Finally, sneaker samples are not the same as friends & family sneakers. While they can fall under the “sample” category, they’re kicks that are exclusive to either Nike employees or the collaborator’s circle (if any).

Top 5 Samples We Wish We Could Own

Okay, if you ask any sneakerhead what their top 5 list of sneaker samples is, it will look very different. So, as a PSA, this list is personal to yours truly. With that said, we hope you agree with some or all of the list!

Nike Dunk Low Pro SB Jason Voorhees

So, in 2007, Nike had the “Horror Pack” in the works. However, some legal drama ensued with production companies hitting Nike with cease-and-desist letters. So, along with the Freddy Krueger Dunk, the Jason Voorhees pair went to the shelves. But that wasn’t before they produced 24 pairs. This kinda makes these babies some of the rarest kicks to exist today. Although none of them are currently in the market, their estimated resale value is a couple of thousand dollars!

OVO x Air Jordan 4 Splatter

In 2018, images of these babies got leaked, and the sneaker industry started wondering if they were going to drop in 2019. The design was pretty dope with paint splatter on the midsole and OVO branding to complete it. Unfortunately for all the excited fans, these babies never saw the light of day. However, the kicks remain some of the most hyped sneaker samples that exist. In fact, the kicks last sold for $16,800 on the resale market.

Off-White x Air Jordan 4 Bred

Whenever we talk about Virgil Abloh and Jordan Brand, you know a banger is in the works. However, not all of the collabs make it out to the world, including this Jordan 4 Bred. This pair was a part of Abloh’s “Figures of Speech” exhibition at the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Chicago. But you see, in 2025, sneaker collector Simon Voltaire Tan put up a pair for sale. The coolest bit is that the Arabic text is the translation of the same text that usually appears on Off-White x Nike collabs!

Last but not least, this might be the most colorful pair on our list of sneaker samples! The Nike SB Dunk Low OFF! Bug Spray never saw the light of day. Rumor has it that this colorway was supposed to be a follow-up to 2008’s SB Dunk Low Mosquito… Which is worth about $2,000 in resale today! In 2024, though, Sotheby’s had a pair of the OFF! Bug Spray SB Dunk Low up for auction, and it was worth up to $24,000!

Adidas Collabs That Deserved Better…

Adidas Pharrell Williams

Besides being one of the most influential music producers in the 21st century, Pharrell got style. And honestly, we think that the hype this partnership garnered in 2014 should’ve stayed. This is one of the Adidas collabs that could have easily matched the hype of Yeezys. However, the three stripes opted for oversaturating the market with the kicks. It seems like, at some point, Adidas x Pharrell stopped being a collab and became a household line like the Originals, Performance, and the new Sportswear!

So, where did they go wrong? There are several potential answers. The first could be because Pharrell doesn’t have his own independent silhouette. Well, it’s not really true, but all the kicks look like a cooler take on silhouettes that Adidas already owns. So maybe people are not into that, and that’s what Yeezys brought to the table.

Another reason could be that the sheer number of kicks Adidas dropped is very high. You can legit find a random pair of NMD Hu at outlets. And we know how exclusivity, among other things, is key to a pair of hype kicks. So, we’ll see whether the brand is gonna change that in the future and revive the line!

Adidas IVY PARK

Ahh, this is one of the Adidas collabs that took a shocking turn in 2022. We love Queen Bey, but the partnership doesn’t seem to be it for many. And we can see it clearly reflected in 2022’s revenues. You see, the profits in 2022 ($40M) dropped a whopping 50% from 2021’s profits($93M). The 2022 profits were a lot less than what Adidas initially expected, which is $250M. That led to the brand dropping the 2023 forecast from $335M to $63M.

Why did this happen though? Let’s be real here, it’s already hard to push sales from less than $100M to $250M. But also, the brand didn’t build a strong rapport with people the way Kanye did by wearing his own apparel. Unless he was promoting another collab, it’s Yeezy, Yeezy, and only Yeezy.

Meanwhile, Beyoncé is pretty private and rarely makes public appearances, let alone in her IVY PARK apparel. She did appear in most of the marketing campaigns though, so there’s that. So whether that’s the reason, or people simply don’t like it, is not very clear. Maybe the brand should test and play around with how to push it all before the contract comes to an end in 2023. After all, Beyoncé is pretty influential with a huge fanbase!

Adidas Bad Bunny

This one hurts because it had some serious potential to be as big as the Travis Scott Nike/Jordan partnership. Bad Bunny was the most streamed artist on Spotify in 2022 and Billboard’s top artist of the year. If that doesn’t scream popular, we don’t know what does. So, why doesn’t the industry lose its marbles when he drops a collab, the way it does when Travis does?

You see, Bad Bunny kicks are worth some good money in resale, but it’s not the same as Travis collabs. For example, the “Easter Egg” Bad Bunny Forum low is worth $611 in resale on average! That could be due to the choice of sneakers. After all, we’ve seen that some Nike x Travis collabs weren’t as lucrative and popular as Jordan collabs. Otherwise, exclusivity could play a part again in how popular a sneaker is.

Adidas Gucci/Prada

You see, when the wave of high-end sportswear hit, Air Dior kicked a$$. People paid a lot of money to get their hands on the exclusive kicks. However, when Adidas partnered up with Gucci and Prada, the release wasn’t exclusive. And here, the failure of that venture is simply because Adidas didn’t play the exclusivity game right. After all, when it comes to looks, Dior didn’t change a lot about the Jordan 1! These two partnerships certainly have their niche, but they also deserved better.

Are Adidas Collabs the Cemetery of Hype?

We already covered the brand and artist collaborations that deserved better in terms of hype and popularity. But now, we’re gonna get extra scandalous and talk about brands and artists who made the checks to striped transition and… kinda lost.

Kanye West – AKA Yeezy

Technically, Kanye West was the first artist to take this interesting leap. And while the Adidas Yeezy partnership became a cornerstone of the industry, we know how THAT ended. It was a shitshow to say the least… But we gotta give credit where credit is due, and the Adidas Yeezy partnership had a fantastic run while it lasted. Wish we could say the same about other brand deals!

Adidas Sean Wotherspoon

A designer who made the leap from the checks to the stripes. Sadly, the hype that his kicks had with Nike didn’t make the leap with him. The one-time hit that Wotherspoon had with Nike in 2018 certainly didn’t move with him. And that’s obvious when you compare resale values. For example, the Nike 1/97 is worth $911 on average, while the Adidas Superstar Superearth is worth $128. Exactly.

Fear of God

So, in 2020, Jerry Lorenzo decided to pull a Kanye and switch from Nike to Adidas. Initially, everyone was interested in what this partnership had to offer. However, it took THREE years for us to get a reveal of the collection. And by that time, many people had already moved on and lost that interest. Now, if you wanna talk numbers, we can easily compare the resale value of Nike x FoG vs Adidas x FoG kicks. For example, the yellow Nike pair resells for $800+. Meanwhile, the latest Adidas FoG Athletics is worth $364 on average. So, we can obviously see a gap in popularity. But who knows? Maybe if they drop something colorful, people will shift their focus back!

CLOT

Okay, if you’ve been around the industry for a while, you definitely know that the Nike CLOT partnership was iconic. Unfortunately, Edison Chen and Nike parted ways in 2023, and Chen moved on to Adidas. Now, while the collaborations are pretty cool, they are nowhere near the hype of the previous Swoosh drops. However, we will keep an out for more drops and hope that this partnership isn’t a complete flop.

Adidas is one of the biggest athletic footwear brands out there, and it’s in almost constant competition with Nike. However, the brand fell behind in the last couple of years for multiple reasons. From not finding its “Jordan” to possibly bad leadership and marketing, we hate to see it lose. We certainly would love to see it come back to the hype map when it comes to sneakers!
